Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the influence of drip irrigation and micro-sprinkler on the dendrometric parameters of two Eucalyptus hybrids at 45 months. The experiment was carried out in Aquidauana, MS, using an experimental design of randomized blocks in split plot scheme. The dendrometric attributes of the trees evaluated were height, diameter at breast height, volume, shape factor, taper, and dry mass production. The Grancam hybrid has the highest growth in height, and the Urograndis has the largest diameter at breast height. Drip irrigation provides an increase of 36.7% in the wood volume of eucalyptus hybrids when compared to those that were not irrigated.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi propor uma nova metodologia para o mapeamento de áreas cafeeiras que inclui dados multitemporais como parâmetros de entrada no processo de classificação, por meio de uma série temporal NDVI do Landsat TM, juntamente com uma abordagem de classificação orientada a objeto. O algoritmo BFAST foi utilizado para a análise dos perfis temporais de café, pastagem e vegetação nativa, aliada à análise da imagem baseada em objetos geográficos. Para a classificação, utilizaram-se as seguintes variáveis multitemporais derivadas do pacote greenbrown R: média, tendência e sazonalidade. Os resultados mostraram que o café, a pastagem e a vegetação nativa têm comportamentos temporais distintos, o que corrobora o uso destes dados como variáveis de entrada para o mapeamento. As classificações com uso das variáveis temporais, associadas a dados espectrais, obtiveram altos índices de acurácia global com 93% de acerto. Quando utilizados somente os dados temporais, as classificações ainda mostraram um percentual de acerto acima de 80%. Dados oriundos de séries temporais do Landsat TM são eficientes para o mapeamento de áreas de cultivo cafeeiro, diminuindo a confusão entre os alvos e tornando o processo de classificação mais preciso, o que contribui para a caracterização e o mapeamento de objetos derivados de uma imagem RapidEye, com alta resolução espacial.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to propose a new methodology for mapping coffee cropping areas that includes multitemporal data as input parameters in the classification process, by using the Landsat TM NDVI time series, together with an object-oriented classification approach. The algorithm BFAST was used to analyze coffee, pasture, and native vegetation temporal profiles, allied to a geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) for mapping. The following multitemporal variables derived from the R package greenbrown were used for classification: mean, trend, and seasonality. The results showed that coffee, pasture, and native vegetation have different temporal behaviors, which corroborates the use of these data as input variables for mapping. The classifications using temporal variables, associated with spectral data, achieved high-global accuracy rates with 93% hit. When using only temporal data, ratings also showed a hit percentage above 80% accuracy. Data derived from Landsat TM time series are efficient for mapping coffee cropping areas, reducing confusion between targets and making the classification process more accurate, contributing to a correct characterization and mapping of objects derived from a RapidEye image, with a high spatial solution.

RESUMO A exploração de impacto reduzido é uma prática bem conhecida e aplicada na maioria dos planos de manejo florestal sustentável na Amazônia. Todavia, ainda há a possibilidade de melhoria do processo de planejamento da operação. Diante da falta de métodos auxiliares à tomada de decisão, o objetivo do trabalho foi desenvolver modelos de programação linear inteira (PLI) para suprir esta demanda. Considerou-se a minimização da distância entre as árvores exploradas e os pátios de estocagem de madeira. Aspectos estruturais, econômicos e produtivos foram incorporados ao modelo, bem como restrições de adjacência. Os dados derivam de uma floresta ombrófila densa na Amazônia Ocidental. Previamente, utilizou-se uma análise fitossociológica e o método BDq como critério de remoção. Posteriormente, modelos de PLI foram formulados para exemplificar as aplicações. Finalmente, 32 cenários (para floresta desbalaceada, UF, e floresta balanceada, BF) foram gerados e comparados com o plano executado no campo (RE). Resultados robustos foram obtidos e atenderam às expectativas de cada cenário. A viabilidade da integração dos modelos de PLI em projetos de manejo de florestas ineqüiâneas foi testado. Os cenários UF e BF testados foram eficientes e concisos, confirmando seu potencial para aumentar a eficiência de planos de exploração madeireira e manejo florestal na Amazônia.

ABSTRACT Reduced-impact logging is a well known practice applied in most sustainable forest management plans in the Amazon. Nevertheless, there are still ways to improve the operational planning process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to create an integer linear programming (ILP) to fill in the knowledge gaps in the decision support system of reduced impact logging explorations. The minimization of harvest tree distance to wood log landing was assessed. Forest structure aspects, income and wood production were set in the model, as well as the adjacency constraints. Data are from a dense ombrophylous forest in the western Brazilian Amazon. We applied the phytosociological analysis and BDq method to define the selective logging criteria. Then, ILP models were formulated to allow the application of the constraints. Finally, 32 scenarios (unbalanced forest, UF, and balanced forest, BF) were generated and compared with real executed plans (RE). Robust results were achieved and the expected finding of each scenario was met. The feasibility to integrate ILP models in uneven-aged forest management projects was endorsed. Consequently, the UF and BF scenarios tested were efficient and concise, introducing new advances for forest management plans in the Amazon. The proposed models have a high potential to improve the selective logging activities in the Amazon forest.

ABSTRACT The present study aims (a) to assess the correlations between forest stand characteristics (viz., basal area, dominant height, and volume) and the reflectance values derived from Landsat 5 TM spectral bands as well as from vegetation indices and (b) to understand how Eucalyptus sp. stand age influences these correlations. Sampling data comprised a set of 35 permanent plots from a forest inventory conducted annually between 2006 and 2011. Spectral data were derived from Landsat 5 TM images. The results showed that TM4 and TM5 spectral bands, as well as vegetation indices ND54 and TM5/4, were better correlated with basal area and volume, while the TM2 spectral band was better correlated with dominant height. Eucalyptus sp. stand age directly influenced the correlations between spectral data and forest stand characteristics, and could not be disregarded in the spectral characterization of the forest variables.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a detecção de mudanças sobre a cobertura do solo em áreas de Floresta e Savana Brasileira, utilizando imagens do satélite Landsat 5/TM e duas metodologias estatísticas iterativas baseadas em objetos geográficos. Foi avaliada a sensibilidade das metodologias em relação à heterogeneidade dos dados de entrada, à utilização de dados de reflectância e índices de vegetação e à utilização de diferentes níveis de confiança. Os períodos analisados compreenderam os anos 2000 a 2006 e 2006 a 2010. Após a segmentação das imagens foram extraídas as grandezas estatísticas descritivas média e desvio padrão de cada objeto. A determinação dos objetos de mudança foi realizada de forma iterativa com base na Distância de Mahalanobis e na distribuição qui-quadrado. Os resultados foram validados com uma prévia detecção visual e analisados de acordo com a curva ROC. Foram obtidos ganhos significativos na utilização de máscara e das bandas 3 e 4 para ambas as áreas testadas com 94,67% e 95,02% dos objetos corretamente detectados como mudança, respectivamente para as áreas de Floresta e Savana. O uso do NDVI e de imagens diferentes se mostraram insatisfatórios para a detecção de mudanças nas áreas testadas

The aim of this work was to assess techniques of land cover change detection in areas of Brazilian Forest and Savanna, using Landsat 5/TM images, and two iterative statistical methodologies based on geographical objects. The sensitivity of the methodologies was assessed in relation to the heterogeneity of the input data, the use of reflectance data and vegetation indices, and the use of different levels of confidence. The periods analyzed were from 2000 to 2006, and from 2006 to 2010. After the segmentation of images, the descriptive statistics average and standard deviation of each object were extracted. The determination of change objects was realized in an iterative way based on the Mahalanobis Distance and the chi-square distribution. The results were validated with an early visual detection and analyzed according to Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve. Significant gains were obtained by using vegetation masks and bands 3 and 4 for both areas tested with 94,67% and 95,02% of the objects correctly detected as changes, respectively for the areas of Forest and Savanna. The use of the NDVI and different images were not satisfactory in this study.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o desenvolvimento das pastagens na Zona da Mata, em Minas Gerais, entre 2000 e 2013, com uso de um parâmetro baseado no índice de crescimento do índice de vegetação da diferença normalizada (NDVI) a partir de séries de dados do "moderate resolution imaging spectrodiometer" (Modis). A partir dos perfis temporais do NDVI, usados como indicadores das condições edafoclimáticas, estimou-se o índice de crescimento (IC) para períodos de 16 dias da estação primaveril de 2012 até o início de 2013, o qual foi comparado ao IC médio de 2000 a 2011, período usado como referência. A área atual de pastagens na Zona da Mata é de aproximadamente 1,2 milhão de hectares. De acordo com os métodos usados, 177.322 ha (14,61%) destas áreas de pastagens apresentam crescimento vegetativo muito baixo; 577.698 ha (45,96%), crescimento baixo; 433.475 ha (35,72%), crescimento equilibrado; 39.980 ha (3,29%), crescimento alto; e 5.032 ha (0,41%), crescimento vegetativo muito alto. As pastagens apresentaram baixo crescimento vegetativo durante o período estudado, e a série NDVI/Modis é fonte útil de dados para a avaliação regional.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to analyze the development of grasslands in Zona da Mata, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, between 2000 and 2013, using a parameter based on the growth index of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (Modis) data series. Based on temporal NDVI profiles, which were used as indicators of edaphoclimatic conditions, the growth index (GI) was estimated for 16-day periods throughout the spring season of 2012 to early 2013, being compared with the average GI from 2000 to 2011, used as the reference period. Currently, the grassland areas in Zona da Mata occupy approximately 1.2 million hectares. According to the used methods, 177,322 ha (14.61%) of these grassland areas have very low vegetative growth; 577,698 ha (45.96%) have low growth; 433,475 ha (35.72%) have balanced growth; 39,980 ha (3.29%) have high growth; and 5,032 ha (0.41%) have very high vegetative growth. The grasslands had predominantly low vegetative growth during the studied period, and the NDVI/Modis series is a useful source of data for regional assessments.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a distribuição potencial de 23 espécies pioneiras no Estado de Minas Gerias, além de identificar as variáveis ambientais que influenciam as suas distribuições. O algoritmo Maxent foi escolhido para relacionar a ocorrência de espécies às seguintes variáveis bioclimáticas: variação diurna de temperatura, isotermalidade, sazonalidade da temperatura, precipitação do mês mais seco, sazonalidade da precipitação (coeficiente de variação) e evapotranspiração real. Também foram avaliados índice de vegetação por diferença normalizada (NDVI), grau de conservação da flora e heterogeneidade espacial de fitofisionomias, bem como erodibilidade (suscetibilidade do solo à erosão), disponibilidade de água subterrânea, textura do solo, teor de matéria orgânica, ocorrência mineral (espécies minerais existentes por unidade litológica), mapa pedológico simplificado, declividade e altitude. A espécie Anadenanthera colubrina foi a mais indicada para o bioma Caatinga, seguida de Casearia sylvestris e Plathymenia reticulata, indicadas para o bioma Mata Atlântica e Cerrado, respectivamente. Recomenda-se utilizar o Maxent como ferramenta para orientar os planos de conservação que necessitam de indicação de espécies, para recuperar áreas de vegetação degradadas ou desmatadas.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the potential distribution of 23 pioneer species in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, as well as to identify the environmental variables that influence their distributions. The Maxent algorithm was chosen to associate the occurrence of species with the following bioclimatic variables: diurnal temperature variation, isothermality, temperature seasonality, driest month precipitation, precipitation seasonality (coefficient of variation), and actual evapotranspiration. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), flora conservation status, and the spatial heterogeneity of vegetation types were also evaluated, besides erodibility (susceptibility of soil to erosion), groundwater availability, soil texture, organic matter content, mineral occurrence (existing mineral species by lithological unit), pedological simplified map, slope and altitude. The species Anadenanthera colubrina was the most suitable for the Caatinga biome, followed by Casearia sylvestris and Plathymenia reticulate, indicated for the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado biomes, respectively. The use of Maxent is recommended as a tool to guide conservation plans that require the indication of species, aiming to recover degraded or deforested vegetation areas.

O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de analisar a influência da idade na detecção automática de árvores em talhões de Eucalyptus sp. por meio de dados LIDAR. Foram analisados 3 talhões com as idades de 3, 5, e 7 anos. Esses talhões tiveram os dados da nuvem de pontos do LIDAR referentes ao primeiro retorno, divididos em dois estratos verticais, o que gerou duas classes: Classe 1 (nuvem de pontos para toda a vegetação) e Classe 2 (nuvem de pontos para a vegetação acima de 10 metros). Os resultados da detecção do número de fustes para as duas classes foram comparados com o censo da área por meio de contagem visual em uma imagem de alta resolução espacial e com dados de inventário florestal. Na comparação com o censo, encontrouse pouca diferença entre as idades para o número de fustes para a Classe 1, sendo mais indicado para as idades de 3 e 5 anos e a Classe 2, apesar de se observar uma tendência de subestimativa dos valores, é mais indicada para a idade de 7 anos. Quando se comparou com os dados do inventário florestal, observou-se uma coerência entre o número de fustes nos dois estratos verticais, desta forma o método proposto mostrou-se compatível com o inventário florestal para a intensidade amostral testada, para a obtenção da variável número de fustes.

The objective of this work was to determine the influence of stand age on the automatic detection of Eucalyptus sp. trees using LIDAR datasets. Three different stands 3, 5 and 7 years old were analyzed. The LIDAR cloud point data of the first return was split into two datasets: Class 1 (points for all vegetation), Class 2 (points for vegetation above 10m). Results for obtaining the number of stems for each dataset were compared to the census of the area, which was done by visual interpretation using an auxiliary high spatial resolution remote sensing image, and to forest inventory estimates. In comparison to the census data, tree counting using Class 1 dataset agreed well for all considered ages, with best results achieved in 3 and 5 year old stands. On the other hand, Class 2 biased toward underestimated values. The best results for this class were verified in 7 year old stands. When compared to the forest inventory data, this methodology proved to be more efficient. The number of stems derived from the forest inventory was biased towards overestimation. In order to achieve better estimates using forest inventory data, an intensification of the sampling procedure would be necessary.

Este trabalho analisou a fragmentação florestal da Área de Proteção Ambiental Coqueiral, que está localizada no município de Coqueiral, região Sul do estado de Minas Gerais. O objetivo foi avaliar a fragmentação florestal da área de estudo, a partir de métricas da paisagem, bem como elaborar modelos de simulação da paisagem, no intuito de fornecer cenários futuros de restauração ecológica, e compará-los com a situação atual da paisagem. A análise do uso e ocupação da terra foi obtida por meio de técnicas de Sistemas de Informação Geográfica e Sensoriamento Remoto, a partir de uma imagem (SPOTMAP) do satélite SPOT 5. A análise da fragmentação florestal foi realizada utilizando o software FRAGSTATS, para calcular as métricas da paisagem mensurando parâmetros como: área, perímetro, forma, conectividade dos fragmentos. Para as simulações da paisagem foram criados buffers de 1 e 5 m no entorno de todos os remanescentes florestais da área de estudo, bem como a recuperação virtual das áreas de preservação permanente. A análise da fragmentação da paisagem mostrou que a vegetação natural está distribuída em 360 fragmentos, sendo 137 deles menores que 1 ha. Os modelos de simulação da paisagem mostraram que a área de vegetação aumentou de 1943,13 ha para 2299,02 ha na simulação em que as APPs foram reflorestadas (Vegetação natural/APPs restauradas = VA). O tamanho médio dos fragmentos nesta mesma simulação aumentou em relação à paisagem atual, passando de 7,66 m para 15,75 m. A paisagem VA mostrou um menor valor de forma (1,93), indicando que a forma dos fragmentos nesta simulação foi mais simples, o que é importante do ponto de vista da conservação, pois diminui o efeito de borda nos fragmentos. Os valores de isolamento não apresentaram diferença considerável nas simulações: 38,9 m (VN); 40,64 m (VB1); 42,89 m (VB5) e 39,75 m (VA), indicando um baixo isolamento dos fragmentos, mesmo na paisagem atual. O índice de conectividade foi alto (acima de 99%) para todas as simulações, indicando que as paisagens apresentam elevada conectividade estrutural. Estes dados são relevantes subsídios para a tomada de decisão e para gestão e planejamento da Área Proteção Ambiental Coqueiral, permitindo a indicação de áreas prioritárias para conservação.

This study analysed the forest fragmentation of Coqueiral Environmental Protected Area (APA Coqueiral), located in Coqueiral, South region of Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The objective was to evaluate the forest fragmentation of Coqueiral APA, using landscape metrics, as well as, elaborating landscape simulation models to provide future scenarios of ecological restoration, and then, to compare these simulations to the current landscape. Land use analyses were carried out through Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing techniques, using a SPOT 5 satellite image (SPOTMAP). Forest fragmentation was analysed by FRAGSTATS software for calculating landscape metrics such as: area, perimeter, shape, and, patch connectivity. We performed 1 and 5 m buffers maps, and a virtual restoration of the Permanent Protected Areas (APP) for landscape simulations. Landscape fragmentation analyses showed that natural vegetation is distributed within 360 patches, being 137 of them smaller than 1 ha. Landscape simulation models revealed that natural vegetation has increased from 1943.13 ha to 2299.02 ha in the restored APP simulation (natural vegetation/restored APPs = VA). The average patch size increased from 7.66 m to 15.75 m in the same simulation in comparison to the current landscape. VA showed a smaller shape value (1.93), indicating that patch shape is simpler in this simulation. This is an important result from the conservation point of view, because as simpler a shape of a patch is, smaller the edge effect is. Isolation values were not statistically different in the simulations: 38.9 m (VN); 40.64 m (VB1); 42.89 m (VB5) e 39.75 m (VA), what indicates low isolation between patches, even in the current landscape. Connectivity index was high (99%) for all simulations, indicating that landscapes have high structural connectivity. These data are relevant inputs to decision makers and to a better planning and management of the APA Coqueiral, allowing us to indicate the priority areas for conservation in this natural reserve.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a possibilidade de se estimar o diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) com os dados de altura e de número de árvores derivados do escâner a laser aerotransportado (LiDAR, "light detection and ranging"), e determinar o volume de madeira de talhão de Eucalyptus sp. a partir dessas variáveis. O número total de árvores detectadas foi obtido com uso da filtragem de máxima local. A altura de plantas estimada pelo LiDAR apresentou tendência não significativa à subestimativa. A estimativa do DAP foi coerente com os valores encontrados no inventário florestal; porém, também mostrou tendência à subestimativa, em razão do comportamento observado quanto à altura. A variável número de fustes apresentou valores próximos aos observados nas parcelas do inventário. O LiDAR subestimou o volume total de madeira do talhão em 11,4%, em comparação ao volume posto na fábrica. A tendência de subestimação da altura das árvores (em média, cerca de 5%) impactou a estimativa do volume individual de árvores e, consequentemente, a do volume do talhão. No entanto, é possível gerar equações de regressão que estimam o DAP com boa precisão, a partir de dados de altura de plantas obtidos pelo LiDAR. O modelo parabólico é o que possibilita as melhores estimativas da produção volumétrica dos talhões de eucalipto.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility of estimating the diameter at breast height (DBH) with tree height and number data derived from airborne laser scanning (LiDAR, light detection and ranging) dataset, and to determine the timber volume of an Eucalyptus sp. stand from these variables. The total number of detected trees was obtained using a local maxima filtering. Plant height estimated by LiDAR showed a nonsignificant tendency to underestimation. The estimate for DBH was coherent with the results found in the forest inventory; however, it also showed a tendency towards underestimation due to the observed behavior for height. The variable number of stems showed values close to the ones observed in the inventory plots. LiDAR underestimated the total timber volume in the stand in 11.4%, compared to the total volume delivered to the industry. The underestimation tendency of tree height (5% mean value) impacted the individual tree volume estimate and, consequently, the stand volume estimate. However, it is possible to obtain regression equations that estimate DBH with good precision, from the LiDAR plant height derived data. The parabolic model is the one that provides the best estimates for timber volumetric yield of eucalyptus stands.

Conduziu-se este trabalho, com o objetivo de se alcançar o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia para a criação de um mapa de uso e cobertura do solo na região norte do estado de MG, onde, além de atividades agropecuárias, predominam vegetações nativas de cerrado, florestas estacionais deciduais e extensas áreas de vereda. Utilizando parcelas inventariadas e imagens dos sensores Rapideye, Landsat TM e MODIS, foram traçados três objetivos específicos: testar o uso de técnicas de segmentação de imagens para uma classificação baseada em objetos contemplando informações espectrais, espaciais e temporais; Testar o uso de imagens de alta resolução espacial (Rapideye) combinadas a séries temporais Landsat-TM, visando a captar os efeitos da sazonalidade, e a classificação dos dados por meio de Redes Neurais Artificiais. Por meio da série temporal de imagens MODIS e parcelas inventariadas, foram extraídas as assinaturas temporais das principais fisionomias presentes na região, observando-se, assim, os melhores períodos do ano a serem representados no processo de classificação. Os objetos criados na segmentação das imagens Rapideye, juntamente com a série temporal Landsat TM, foram classificados por dez diferentes arquiteturas de redes MultiLayerParceptron. Os resultados mostraram que metodologia atende aos propósitos do estudo e as características das fisionomias presentes na região. Com excelentes valores de acurácia para as classes nativas, o estudo mostra a importância da adequação da base de dados em trabalhos de classificação e da importância de uma segmentação que atenda aos propósitos do trabalho.

The aim of this study was to develop a methodology for mapping land use and land cover in the northern region of Minas Gerais state, where, in addition to agricultural land, the landscape is dominated by native cerrado, deciduous forests, and extensive areas of vereda. Using forest inventory data, as well as RapidEye, Landsat TM and MODIS imagery, three specific objectives were defined: 1) to test use of image segmentation techniques for an object-based classification encompassing spectral, spatial and temporal information, 2) to test use of high spatial resolution RapidEye imagery combined with Landsat TM time series imagery for capturing the effects of seasonality, and 3) to classify data using Artificial Neural Networks. Using MODIS time series and forest inventory data, time signatures were extracted from the dominant vegetation formations, enabling selection of the best periods of the year to be represented in the classification process. Objects created with the segmentation of RapidEye images, along with the Landsat TM time series images, were classified by ten different Multilayer Perceptron network architectures. Results showed that the methodology in question meets both the purposes of this study and the characteristics of the local plant life. With excellent accuracy values for native classes, the study showed the importance of a well-structured database for classification and the importance of suitable image segmentation to meet specific purposes.

As terras (conceito mais abrangente do que solos, incluindo todos os elementos do ambiente: solos, geologia, relevo, clima, recursos hídricos, flora e fauna, além dos efeitos da ação antrópica) do estado de Minas Gerais estão em diferentes condições de solo, clima e sócio-economia, portanto, são distintas as vocações para produção de bens agrícolas e o mapeamento da vocação agrícola das terras do estado é fundamental para o planejamento norteado da sustentabilidade. O geoprocessamento utiliza técnicas de tratamento da informação geográfica e o SIG permite avaliar com mapas digitais os fenômenos geográficos e suas inter-relações. Objetivando avaliar a vocação agrícola das terras do estado, utilizaram-se o mapa de solos, o conhecimento de campo, o inventário florestal e o banco de dados relacionados ao Zoneamento Ecológico-Econômico (ZEE) de Minas Gerais, para elaborar em SIG o mapa de aptidão agrícola. Para tal, combinaram-se os mapas de fertilidade do solo, deficiência de água, deficiência de oxigênio, vulnerabilidade à erosão e de impedimentos à mecanização. Em termos de expressão geográfica, o principal fator limitante das terras é a fertilidade do solo, seguido pela deficiência de água, impedimentos à mecanização e vulnerabilidade à erosão. Quanto à aptidão agrícola, o grupo 2 (aptidão regular para lavouras) é o de maior abrangência, representando 45,13% do estado. Para os níveis de manejo A e B, baixo e moderado nível tecnológico, respectivamente, a classe de aptidão mais expressiva é a regular, seguida pela classe restrita e por último a classe adequada, enquanto para o nível de manejo C (alto nível tecnológico), a classe predominante é a restrita. O tipo de utilização mais intensivo predominante é para lavouras, cuja área aumenta substancialmente com investimento de capital e tecnologia (níveis de manejo B e C).

Lands (broader concept than soils, including all elements of the environment: soils, geology, topography, climate, water resources, flora and fauna, and the effects of anthropogenic activities) of the state of Minas Gerais are in different soil, climate and socio-economics conditions and suitability for the production of agricultural goods is therefore distinct and mapping of agricultural suitability of the state lands is crucial for planning guided sustainability. Geoprocessing uses geographic information treatment techniques and GIS allows to evaluate geographic phenomena and their interrelationships using digital maps. To evaluate the agricultural suitability of state lands, we used soil maps, field knowledge, forest inventories and databases related to Ecological-Economic Zoning (EEZ) of Minas Gerais, to develop a map of land suitability in GIS. To do this, we have combined the maps of soil fertility, water stress, oxygen deficiency, vulnerability to erosion and impediments to mechanization. In terms of geographical expression, the main limiting factor of lands is soil fertility, followed by lack of water, impediments to mechanization and vulnerability to erosion. Regarding agricultural suitability, the group 2 (regular suitability for crops) is the most comprehensive, representing 45.13% of the state. For management levels A and B, low and moderate technological level, respectively, the most expressive suitability class is the regular, followed by the restricted class and last, the adequate class, while for the management level C (high technological level) the predominant class is the restricted. The predominant most intensive use type is for crops, whose area increases substantially with capital investment and technology (management levels B and C).

O Light Detection and Ranging, ou LIDAR, tem se tornado uma eficiente ferramenta auxiliar para a extração de dados no inventário florestal e também em outros estudos florestais. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de estabelecer uma metodologia eficiente para a utilização do LIDAR para a contagem do número de árvores em um povoamento de Eucalyptus sp., localizado no sul do Estado da Bahia. Apresenta-se desde o processamento dos dados brutos obtidos em voo até o número final da contagem de árvores. Os passos intermediários são de vital importância para a qualidade dos resultados e os mesmos são obtidos por meio das seguintes etapas de processamento: organização da nuvem de pontos; criação do modelo de superfície do dossel (MSD) por meio da geração de uma TIN e interpolação Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) e contagem automatizada final das árvores com um algoritmo de máxima local com janelas de 5 x 5 e 3 x 3. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados à contagem manual das árvores em imagens Quickbird para a verificação da acurácia. O acerto da contagem foi de 97,36% por meio da interpolação IDW com a janela de 5X5 para o algoritmo de contagem. Esse resultado evidencia a eficácia da metodologia produzida e o potencial para futuras aplicações.

Light Detection and Ranging, or LIDAR, has become an effective ancillary tool to extract forest inventory data and for use in other forest studies. This work was aimed at establishing an effective methodology for using LIDAR for tree count in a stand of Eucalyptus sp. located in southern Bahia state. Information provided includes in-flight gross data processing to final tree count. Intermediate processing steps are of critical importance to the quality of results and include the following stages: organizing point clouds, creating a canopy surface model (CSM) through TIN and IDW interpolation and final automated tree count with a local maximum algorithm with 5 x 5 and 3 x 3 windows. Results were checked against manual tree count using Quickbird images, for verification of accuracy. Tree count using IDW interpolation with a 5x5 window for the count algorithm was found to be accurate to 97.36%. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of the methodology and its use potential for future applications.

Verificando a necessidade de aperfeiçoar o planejamento da colheita e transporte de madeira, já que estas atividades são as que mais influenciam no custo final da madeira posta em fábrica, neste trabalho, objetivou-se desenvolver uma nova proposta metodológica que utiliza ferramentas de geotecnologia e pesquisa operacional visando à determinação de melhores locais para o empilhamento de madeira e a quantidade de madeira alocada em cada pilha selecionada. As análises foram feitas, utilizando dois softwares de sistema de informação geográfica (SIG) e de pesquisa operacional (PO), respectivamente. As análises espaciais no SIG foram realizadas a partir de layers da área de estudo pertencente à Votorantim Celulose e Papel, localizada no município de São José dos Campos, visando à obtenção de três variáveis: graus de dificuldade de movimentação de máquinas florestais, grau de dificuldade para o empilhamento de toras e a distância das áreas para empilhamento em relação às estradas existentes. Para a obtenção dessas variáveis, foram combinadas as layers contendo informações sobre a inclinação do terreno e estradas existentes em uma nova análise denominada sobreposição ponderada. Posteriormente, os resultados foram filtrados e inseridos em ambiente de pesquisa operacional que visou à maximização do volume de madeira em cada pilha selecionada. Por meio dos resultados obtidos pelo sistema de informação geográfica foram selecionados 80 locais potenciais para as pilhas de madeira. Com a utilização da pesquisa operacional eliminaram-se 59 destes locais, com uma redução de 73%, restando como locais ótimos 21 pilhas para o armazenamento da madeira. Para cada uma das 21 pilhas, foi determinada a quantidade de madeira ideal a ser alocada em cada uma.

In view of the need to improve the planning of timber harvest and transportation, with both activities being the most influential in determining the final cost of timber delivered to the mill yard, this work aims to develop a new methodological proposal using operations research and geotechnology tools in order to determine optimal locations for log stacking and also the amountof timber to be allocated to each selected stack. Analysis was performed using two software applications, geographic information system (GIS) and operations research (OR). GIS spatial analyses were based on layers of the study site, which is a property owned by Votorantim Celulose e Papel, located in the municipality of São José dos Campos, in order to obtain three variables: degree of difficulty in operating forestry equipment, degree of difficulty in log stacking, and distance between log stacks and existing roadways. To obtain these variables, layers containing information on terrain inclination and existing roadways were combined in another analysis named weighted overlay. Results were then filtered and inserted into an operations research environment for maximizationof the timber volume in each selected stack. With results obtained from the geographic information system, 80 potential sites were selected for log stacking. By using operations research, 59 of these sites were ruled out, a 73% reduction in the number of potential sites, with only 21 sites remaining as potentially optimal for log storage. For each of these 21 sites, an optimal amount of timber wasdetermined to be allocated to each one of them.

A análise subpixel é capaz de gerar campos contínuos que representam a variabilidade intrínseca das classes temáticas. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se desenvolver um modelo numérico para representar a variabilidade de cobertura de dossel e de superfície exposta dentro de cada formação florestal. Este estudo foi conduzido em área de amortecimento ao longo da sub-bacia no médio São Francisco em MG, Brasil. Foram usados imagens dos satélites Landsat TM, e IKONOS, e o algoritmo GUIDE para ajustes dos modelos. Os resultados foram duas imagens índices, uma de cobertura arbórea e outra de superfície exposta para toda a área estudada, utilizando o modelo de árvore de regressão. O uso de modelos não-paramétricos e não-lineares por árvore de regressão apresentou resultados satisfatórios na representação de padrões de formações florestais aluviais, deciduais e savânicas.

Sub-pixel analysis is capable of generating continuous fields, which represent the spatial variability of certain thematic classes. The aim of this work was to develop numerical models to represent the variability of tree cover and bare surfaces within the study area. This research was conducted in the riparian buffer within a watershed of the São Francisco River in the North of Minas Gerais, Brazil. IKONOS and Landsat TM imagery were used with the GUIDE algorithm to construct the models. The results were two index images derived with regression trees for the entire study area, one representing tree cover and the other representing bare surface. The use of non-parametric and non-linear regression tree models presented satisfactory results to characterize wetland, deciduous and savanna patterns of forest formation.
